Leonardo da Vinci was one of the most important painters of the Italian Renaissance. Scholars are still not certain exactly when and where he was born. His last home, Vinci is located near Florence, but there is no record or evidence that he ever lived there. There is some speculation that his birthplace may have been Milan. After studying in Verrocchio's workshop in Florence and serving as an apprentice to master Andrea del Verrocchio, Leonardo worked as a lot foreman in Milan (1482 - 1499). During this time he built numerous models for military devices and machines. Leonardo's final years were spent mostly at the court of King Francis I of France (1516 - 1519). At 65 years old, Leonardo accepted King Francis' offer to enter his service as First Painter, Architect, Engineer and Designer.
