Art historians usually regard Claude Monet as the most influential artist of impressionism. Monet was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris, France. He was the first child of Claude Monet and his wife Camille Doncieux. The family was middle-class and lived in a neighborhood of artists. Monet's father worked as a painter and art dealer. His mother was involved in the arts and enjoyed painting. Monet received his first painting lessons from his fathe r at age 6. He also attended art classes at school where he learned about drawing and coloring. At age 12, Monet entered the Le Havre secondary school of the arts where he studied with LĂ©on FĂ©rĂšre. In 1857, Monet decided to become an artist after seeing a landscape by Gustave Courbet (1819-1877). This experience inspired him to pursue art as a career rather than just hobby or pastime.
