Giulio Rosati (1861-1923) was born in Rome, Italy and did not follow his family's career of banking and miliatary. Instead he studied art at the Accademia di San Luca under Dario Querci and Francesco Podesti. Later in his career, he studied with Luis Álvarez y Catalá, director of the Prado Museum, Madrid. He worked mainly in watercolor, and occasionally oil paint. His painting Oriental Scene was exhibited at the Exposition di Belle Arte, in Rome in 1900. Many of Rosati’s paintings feature the Orient and its customs. In The Carpet Merchants, three men negotiate over colorful carpets. The same motif can be seen in The Carpet Sellersand The Carpet Seller. Picking the Favorite is an erotic composition that owes much to Rubens’s treatment of the female nude.
