Rudolph Ernst

Austrian-French painter and graphic artist Rudolf Ernst (born in Vienna, 14 February 1854, died in Fontenay-aux-Roses, 1932). He specialized in neo-orientalist subject matter. His father was an architect and encouraged him to take up art; he began studying at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna at the age of fifteen. Although he first trained in Rome, his principal teacher was August Eisenmenger, who had a great influence on young Ernst's work. In 1874 he became a member of The Vienna Secession group founded by Gustav Klimt, but left four years later over conflicts concerning their exhibitions. Two years later he visited Morocco with Count Alfred d'Andlau (1888); this trip inspired many paintings and drawings based on oriental themes. In 1889 Ernst married Marie von Thun und Hohenstein - she was a member of a wealthy banking family - and settled down in Paris where he remained for the rest of his life. From 1886 he began having work exhibited by galleries associated with Symbolism and Orientalism such as La Libre Esthetique where Gustave Moreau also held shows.
