Rembrandt Van Rijn

Rembrandt Van Rijn was born in 1606, and he died in 1669 at the age of 63. He is regarded as being one of the greatest artists of all time, best known for his oil paintings. He began painting as a child, and is said to have been apprenticed as an artist at the age of fourteen. While he was studying under Lastman, he began to paint portraits on commission for wealthy individuals. After opening his own studio at the age of 21 years old, it is said that he painted more than 200 self-portraits by the time he was 25 years old! In addition to oil paintings, he also drew and etched countless other works throughout his life. He was born in Leiden, the son of a miller. At the age of 14 he went to Amsterdam and started his art education, studying with a famous painter named Jacob van Swanenburgh. He lived and worked there until 1631, when he moved to Amsterdam with his wife Saskia van Uylenberg. There he had great success in portraiture and married another successful portrait artist named Geertje Dircx. Unfortunately their private life was quite unstable; their first child died at two months old, and his wife died later that year due to consumption. His second child also died shortly after birth, but Titus (who would be their only surviving child) was born around this time as well.
