Mary Cassatt was an American Impressionist
painter and printmaker--and one of the most celebrated female artists of the 19th century. Her work is characterized by a candid approach to contemporary life, naturalistic subject matter and swift brushwork. Born in Pennsylvnia in 1844, Cassatt trained in Philadelphia before moving to Europe at age 27. There she came under the influence of French Realism, especially the works of Degas, Manet and Toulouse-Lautrec. Her paintings are inspired by the everyday life and women of her time. Known for her Impressionistic style, she preferred to paint from life and painted scenes from everyday life like mothers with children and images of people in their homes and in cafés.
