Jacques-Louis David
Jacques-Louis David (August 30, 1748 - December 29, 1825) was a French painter in the Neoclassical style. His cerebral brand of history painting marked a change in taste away from Rococo frivolity toward classical austerity and severity, harmonizing with the moral climate of the final years of the Ancien Régime. In an era of reverence for the past, David epitomized the Romantic spirit with his dramatic use of light and dark, which brought out the spiritual qualities of his subjects. A painter who could do both painted portraits and scenes from history was a valuable asset for any royal family, and so he received many commissions from Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
