Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter known for his romanticized scenes of ancient Rome. These include many famous paintings, such as "A Sculptor's Studio," "Daughters of the House," and "The Finding of Moses." Born in Dronrijp, he moved to Rome in 1852 to enroll at the Accademia di San Luca. He became friends with fellow artist Wilhelm von Kobell; together they studied Italian masters like Raphael and Michelangelo.
Alma-Tadema was a respected painter throughout his life, and became one of the most famous and wealthy artists of the 19th century.
