Born December 6, 1841 in Montpellier, France and raised in a wealthy Protestant family, Jean Frédéric Bazille was able to pursue his passion for painting by studying with Jean-Léon Gérôme. He painted portraits and landscapes in the French Impressionist style but his work was harshly criticized by other artists as being too decorative and artificial.
