Armand Guillaumin was a French impressionist painter who was born in Paris in 1841. The son of a wallpaper designer, he began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts, but was expelled in 1860 for 'unruly behavior'.
Guillaumin worked as a painter, art critic and teacher throughout his career, but is best known for his paintings of peasant life. He painted primarily in oil on canvas and often used bold colors to depict everyday scenes from rural France.
Guillaumin died in 1906 at the age of 65, having produced over 2,000 paintings during his lifetime. In addition to being one of the most famous impressionist painters, he also had a great influence on other artists working at the time, including Claude Monet and Paul Cézanne.
