Some may say that no one would have any sympathy for the Trojan couple which comprised the central characters of Homer's Iliad. This is simply not true. In Jacques-Louis David's masterpiece, portraying a scene from the famous epic poem, we see Andromache holding her son, who holds a small sword as if he were a young man, in contrast to his mother's more feminine pose. While Achilles had lain asleep after slaying Hector, she and her son stole out from the city, escaping with their lives.
